Volvo Repair: 1990 240gl wagon stalling problem, fuel pump relay, throtle body

Question
Hi Roger,
I have had my volvo sitting idle for the last 18 months while I got it licensed, and only just got the car relicensed. I have recently installed a new gearbox mount and had an electrician friend clean up the fuel pump relay. When I first started it, it ran very rough, but this was solved when I topped it up with fresh fuel. However the problem seems to be coming back. When starting it when it has not been recently started, I have to keep my foot on the accelerator for a short while as it stalls straight away otherwise, and if I slowly take my foot off the pedal after a while it stabilises. However, sometimes it stalls while I am driving alone (usually while decelerating). I think the problem may be the fuel filter, but I am not sure.

Answer
Peter, I always wondered why people always assume the fuel filter is the problem.  I have been doing this a long time and I have never seen a huge filter like that get clogged.  Anyway.  I would start by  cleaning and adjusting the throtle body.  After that if its still doing it, do an airmass meter test.  Unplug the meter while running, let it surge then plug it back in. If it stalls then the meter is bad.  Roger
