QUESTION: My dilemma-the mechanic took two heads -one cracked and one with bent valves. He took both heads apart without identifying the intake cam or the exhaust cam.  I do not know which is which and I am told the only way to time the engine is to find #1 cylinder and position the lobes in the correct position,  If not positioned correctly the valves would bend again.

the intake must be in correct side of head & same for exaust.  No parts were marked when taking apart.  thank you very, very much for your help, Ralph

Answer
Raplh, I know its a long shot but did he take everything off the cam?  If he left the distributor plate on it that would help you identify it.  I have never had this problem because rule number one is to mark the cams.  I do know that we use a special tool to keep the rear cam lines straight.  You can try that and see where the lobes line up.
