Volvo Repair: 1993 850 problems, cabin air filter, cable problem

Question
Roger,
I have several issues with my '93 850:
1. A few months ago, after working perfectly for almost 4 years, the AC went out. While driving, I detected a faint smell of something burning (electrical) and the AC stopped working. After restarting the car, the unit was blowing warm air at full blast and would not respond to the controls. I removed the fuse to prevent further damage. You've mentioned in these forums that the control unit is a common problem on '93 850s. Should I buy a replacement (used) and how difficult is it to replace?

2. I also have a driver's seat back that won't recline. The motor works, but it won't move. You mention that this is a cable problem. SHould I attempt to fix it? How expensive is it to have it done by a Volvo shop?

3. My sun roof (after working for several years) now opens only part way. What could be causing this and is it something I could fix myself?

4. I also have encountered random stalling. The engine will shut down and will only restart after several trys/several minutes. I can smell raw gas when trying to start it. Once it starts, it runs fine for several days or even weeks then stalls again. What shoudl I check?

5. The cruise control stopped working some time ago. Could this be due to the fact that the engine is not running properly?

6. The infamous "flashing arrow" problem. After removing the console under the shifter to do some work, the "arrow" now flashes randomly. Is this easily repaired?

And lastly, does this vehicle have a "cabin" air filter abd if so, where is it located?

Sorry to bombard you with questions, but I really like my Volvo and want to take car of these issues. I appreciate your valuable assistance!

Answer
Luis, 1. Control head easy to replace.  It just pops out. 2.  I wouldnt try doing this one, I dont even like doing them. should only be around 100 bucks to fix.  3. sounds like something is stuck or the motor needs to be re-timed.  Sounds like its out of sync.  4.  check fuel pump.  Common failure and annoying intermittent problems.  5.  No.  vacuum tube under battery is probably corroded and would need replacing. 6. Will need new switch and PNP switch on transmission.  7.  If the Evap was done, then it will have one.  Its under the hood, under the black covering on the passenger side.  Roger
