Volvo Repair: Brake lights???, volvo 940 sw, neutral safety switch

Question
Roger,

Thanks, your diagnosis seems reasonable.  I have pulled the connector from the brake pedal switch and crossed with a wire to see if the brake lights would go on.  Nothing!  The switch on the pedal moves freely, though may need slight adjustment?
This issue with the brake lights first appeared with a rattling/clicking sound coming from the gear shift area.  I wonder if the shift lock release is integrated with the brake light system and the bulb failure switch or relay?  The noise coming from the shift area is loud like marbles bouncing around.  Sounds serious to me.  Thanks!

-----Question-----
1995 Volvo 940 SW; non-turbo.
No brake lights!  I step on brake pedal and hear a clicking sound coming from either the dash panel or the fuse box.  No warning lights, i.e., ABS, bulb, etc., and the brakes work fine.  Just no brake lights.  Help???
And, thanks for your expertise.

Keen, there are 2 switches that control the brake lights.  Have you checked the fuse first?  Behind the ashtray is a bulb failure unit.  Its round and red.  Those fail.  Also the actual brake pedal switch.  Did you happen to check all the bulbs to see if they were burnt?  Roger

Answer
Keen, that has nothing to do with the brake lights.  there may be a coin down there that accidently slipped down.  There is  a neutral safety switch down there.  Nothing to do with brake lights.  What color was the switch that you tried to cross the wire?  If it had a vacuum tube on it, thats not it.  Im still going with the bulb failure relay if the fuses and bulbs are ok.  Roger
