Volvo Repair: 1995 Volvo 850 wagon, non-turbo electrical issue, volvo 850 wagon, windshield wipers

Question
Hi,

I have a 1995 Volvo 850 wagon, non-turbo.  Sometimes when I first crank the car,
the headlights don't work, the turn signal doesn't work, the ABS warning light
comes on and I have to press the shiftlock override to get the car in gear. If I
hit the steering column with my hand, the problem goes away.  Other electrical
things like the windshield wipers, radio, etc. work.

Does this sound like anything you've ever heard of?  And do you think the dash
would have to be removed to get to the wires involved?  I would like to sound a
little bit knowledgeable when I take it in for service and would like to get
some idea of how involved the repair might be.

Thank you!

Answer
Fay, this is a common problem with the 850.  When you turn the key back a little everything works right?  The problem is what is called the electrical portion of the ignition switch.  Its not too bad to do.  Typical parts and labor would be around $100 bucks.  A good Volvo shop or dealer would be the best bet.  Joe's garage wont have the right parts to do it.  Roger
