Volvo Repair: S60 Volvo Idle, mass air flow sensor, volvo of lisle

Question
I acquired a 2001 S60 with 400k (I was told the miles were not accurate, but Volvo confirmed they were.)  It runs fine when completely warmed up, but has idle surge on cold start up, appx 800 - 1200 rpm and sometimes shuts down.  The dealer (Patrick) replaced the timing belt and the mass air flow sensor and told me the converter was going bad.  The exhaust is okay, no unusual smell or smoke and the car has great acceleration.  I've read about O2 sensor, fuel pressure regulator, and throttle problems, with similar symptoms.  I don't want to spend a lot of money on a converter and find out it was something else.  I can change parts myself if it does not involve software.  Also, can you recommend a good suburban Volvo dealer? (Lisle)?  Thank you so much for any ideas.  Bob

Answer
Bob, the dealer should have performed the throtle body recall.  400k on a 5 year old car?  What the heck?  They must have lived in that thing.  There is upgraded software and a throtle unit that should have been done for free.  The only dealer I have in Lisle is Volvo of Lisle.  All the other dealers are pretty far away.  Ask about the recall.  Roger
