Volvo Repair: lighting problems: 84 and 86 240DL, lighting problems, accurate response

Question
Hi Roger:  This is the second time I have written you and I must again thank you for your quick and accurate response previously.

Here's the situation:  with the '84, the light switch on the panel first just became difficult.  One had to turn and turn the switch to make the lights come on.  Felt sort of like the switch was stripped.  Now, no response at all.  I'm sure all I have to do is get at the switch and replace it, but how does one remove the panel?  In my Chittenden manual (which I pore over incessantly) it makes it sound like it will just pop off, but not so.  Hints?

The '86 also has lighting difficulties.  I just purchased it about a month ago, when the rear lights worked but about a week ago, a friend realized that there was no glory there and told me.  I thought it might be bulbs, but no.  The left taillight works but that's it.  I looked at the wiring, and it's easy to see that this is not the first time rear lights have been a problem.  Looks like they have been rewired a couple of times, and maybe not by an expert.  My question is this - where could I find a simple schematic to show me where these wires should connect?  I can see where one group of wires is just hanging there, so obviously not making contact to whatever it should be, but don't have the faintest as to where I might begin testing it's viability to it's true connection.  Other hints?

Thanks so much.

Answer
Suzanne, on the 84, the 2 knobs just come off and then the plate that covers it also just pops off.  Use a smal screwdriver, then you remove the nut holding the switch in and it will come out from the bottom.  As for the 86.  There is no easy schematic anywhere that I know of.  I hate chiltons or haynes but they do have good wiring diagrams.  You probably need new assemblies.  ROger
