Volvo Repair: Coin in the seatbelt, hex bolt, handy guy

Question
James,

How difficult is it to change the entire buckle assembly.  I'm a handy guy but I also don't want to get involved in something that may be too involved?

Question -
I have a 2006 XC90.  A dime was dropped into the rear seat belt causing it no longer work.  Is there an easy way to disassemble it and take the coin out?  Thanks.

Answer -
It unfortunantly cannot be disassembled.  They are designed that way so they can't be accidentally assembled incorrectly or damaged and then put back into the vehicle.  Too much liability when dealing with safty equipment like that.  Unless you can extract the coin straight out the opening with a long pick or screwdriver then you will just have to buy a whole new buckle assembly.  A buckle assembly will cost somewhere between 45-75 dollars I believe.  Not 100% sure on the price but it should be somewhere in that range.

Answer
It isn't difficult.  If it is the front seat you will have to unbolt it and pull it to the side to get room for your tools.  If its the second seat you may have to do the same.  Its an torx bolt in the front and should be a regular hex bolt in the rear.  If you have to move the seat alot, be sure to undo the connector under the seat.  Make sure not to pull it to hard.  If you do disconnect it: DO NOT TURN THE KEY ON!! It will turn on the airbag light and only a dealer can turn it off.  You have to buy the part either way, so try doing it yourself, and if it seems too difficult for you, it didn't cost you anything except a little bit of time.  Any shop should be able to install.  Doesn't have to be a dealer install.  It DOES have to be a dealer part though.
