Volvo Repair: Volvo Transmissions, volvo wagon, mechanical skills

Question
I have some mechanical skills, but not a lot.
the car is an 83 volvo wagon, 4 speed manual trans. with push button overdrive.
I bought the car on craigs list in POrtland oregon. The guy who owned it replaced the transmission right before i bought it and said that as he was putting it back together he forgot to put on one final piece that will help the car shift easier. He said the piece was easy to put on, but he never told me what it was called. Now he won't return my emails or answer his phone. i have yet to get the part from him and don't know what I'm looking for. One guy told me it's the shift plate, another told me I'm missing a "shift syncro"? Any idea what I'm looking for?

In addition, I am also leaking transmission fluid.
So I got under the car and was looking around and noticed an orange piece or part attached in-line to the transmission, I assume this is my shifting mechanism. Any way at the bottom of it, it looks like I'm missing a couple of bolts that attache it to the transmission. Any idea what size these would be?
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Also where do I check the transmission fluid on this car?
Thanks in advance,

Chris Huggett

Answer
Hi Chris,
There are many parts that relate to the gearshift and you need someone who knows Volvos to look at the tranny/supporting hardware.
You could get manual showing pictures...
You definitaly don't want to get into syncro tranny work...
         Good luck,
