Volvo Repair: 91 Volvo 740 non-Turbo, turbo trouble, volvo 740

Question
Mr. Dooley,

I have a 91 Volvo 740 non-turbo, trouble starting the car, can get it to crank by spraying starter fluid but once the vehicle is turned off wont start back up.  Had the fuel filter and fuel pump replaced.  After changing the fuel pump showing the pressure at 57psi when it should be 42psi, do i need another fuel pump?Checked all fuses and relays cant figure out the problem your help is greatly appreciated.
                        Thank you, Kayvon.

Answer
Hello Kayvon,  From your disciption, fuel seems to be lacking in the equation.Getting fuel pressure is good, your's is OK.A few things you need to check: does fuel pump get hot after only 4/7 min.,if so fuel pressure reg.is not letting fuel to 'return' to the tank=replace it. 2.if there is any fuel leaking from the reg. replace it.Its the silver barrel shaped part, with a vac. hose attached.right by the t/stat housing.Where the upper rad.hose connects to engine. Is the fuel fresh, that important,if not fresh replace it,'bad' fuel is now volitile enough to start the firing sequense.Thank you and good hunting!  PKD
