Volvo Repair: s40 starting problems, troubleshooting ideas, engine managment

turned key on volvo s40 t reg lights came on on dashboard but went straight out.further attempts at turning the key results in nothing.theres no power going to engine,no lights on dashboard.remote control works,hazard lights work,interior lights work,tried jump leads,fuses ok

I'll have to know what style of S40 you have first.  They have two entirely different style engine managment systems.  It would be too long to type diagnostic troubleshooting ideas for both.  So get back to me with  the year/style and engine if it is the newer style.
