Volvo Repair: Power steering pump, power steering pump, steering racks

Hello Phil,
I intend to permanently remove the ac compressor from my 87 245, and replace the current ps pump with the pre-1985 Saginaw type with integral reservoir.  I was lucky enough to find the brackets for this setup off an B23 engine in a local pick and pull.  My question is this.  Will this type of ps pump connect straight away to the steering rack in my 87 245?  And what problems might I encounter during this swap?  For the record, I am using the Haynes series manual for all information gained to this point in time.  Thanks.

I've never done this type of swap and am not sure about compatibility between pump and rack. Also I don't know if all your brackets will line up. Why are you removing the ac compressor?

Phil,
For starters the ac never worked very well from the day I purchased the car in Decemer 1986, and since I live in northeastern Pa, I rarely use the ac anyway. Yes, I am the original owner.

At the present time I am getting a increasingly soft metallic whine from the ac that increases or decreases with the rpm of the engine.  I made a few calls and was told the repairs could run in the several hundred dollars range.  So way not just eliminate 60 pounds or so from the engine bay, and make the switch. And a pre-1985 reman ps pump would only cost about 215 dollars.  Regarding match up, I currently have a 1983 B21Ft engine sitting in my garage.  I bought an old junk one, took it apart, cleaned it up, and then reassembled it.  But more importantly, I put a 1986Ti 530 head on the B21, and it fits perfectly, with the original timing belt, cover and all pulleys matching up. So I am sure that would not be a problem. I know Volvo used many different version of steering racks in the 240 series, but it doesn't seem plausible they would change the ps connections. But I would like to confirm that assumption before making the switch.  I know this is a long winded response, but it's the shortest version I have. If you have any other suggestions. please let me know. Thanks for the continued interest.  Chas

Answer
The sound or problem you may have may be from the ac compressor clutch. If this is the case, I'd just replace the clutch assembly but just keep the wire disconnected. Also install extra washers when installing so there'll be no contact from plate to clutch.
