Question -
I have a 740 Volvo 4 cyl., non turbo that has been giving me problems off and on for five years. The last time it was repaired, replaced sending units, new distributor and finally had wiring harness repaired which seemed to cure problem fo a while, starting over again and just had it to Volvo dealer who said he hadf to readjust pick up in distributer, lasted a day and car will not start again. Car is a 1987 GLE 4 cylinder. I like the car but it is putting me in poor house and nobody seems to know what problem is, all playing process of elimination without results. Do you know of any problems like this and also if any recalls?
Answer - Problem seems to be fuel related, if I spray starting fluid into system, car attempts to start. I changed relay, did not make a difference. I do not hear fuel pump running, but not sure if I would. How can I check if bad fuel pump?
This distributor has no adjustment to pick-up. It just plugs in....Need to know if problem is fuel or ignition related. Lot of problems can cause this, but is easy to diagnose. Possible problems are:
fuel pump relay
air mass sensor ( use oem, not aftermarket )
power stage
fuel pump ( in-tank and external )

really need to know when this condition occurs most, more info, easier to diagnose

Answer
There are two fuel pumps in system, one in tank and the other under the car by fuel filter. When cranking have someone underneath feel the main fuel pump and check to see if it buzzes. If it doesn't, then need to check for current at the pump. If no current, need to trace circuit.
If pump buzzes, then need to check fuel pump pressure with fuel pressure gauges to be sue it's up to specs.

The in-tank pump requires alot of disassemblies just to access, so I won't go there.  But do make sure the fuel tank has more than 1/2 tank of gas. If not and if in-tank pump is bad, there will not be any fuel getting to the main pump.

Whew!! Hope you got all that.
