Volvo Repair: 1992 240 stalls on trip, temperature gauge, mile trip

Question
On a recent 500 mile trip, my 1992 240 lost power on three separate occasions.  The car didn't die, but when I tried to give it gas, the car just sat there.  Each time, I pulled over, waited a couple of minutes, started the car with no problem and continued my trip. I made it the last 300 miles with no problems, although I could fill some occasional erratic surges of power.  Could it be a faulty fuse?

In addition, occasionally the car temperature gauge would approach red until I turned on the heater, then it would go down again.

Thanks

Answer
the loss of power could be several things from a bad fuel pump to possibly a bad airmass meter.I would check the fuses to be sure none are corroded.there really are many things that can cause this.

the running hot could be bad thermostat.it could be poor air flow across the radiator due to the outside of the radiator being clogged with dirt and bugs this would cause that especially if it is doing this in stop and go traffic
