BMW: Dashboard Failure 84 BMW 318i, bmw 318i, ball park

Question
Hi Josh,

I am looking into buying a 84' BMW 318i which is running pretty good.  The only major thing that concerns me is that the Dash died and does not register anything; Km/h, fuel etc. No lights, no gauges. Stereo and headlights are working.  I know this could be as simple as a fuse, but would this be a red flag for more serious problems.  Any advice and any ball park $$$ amount to fix such a problem would be greatly appreciated.

All the best, Kevin

Answer
Kevin,
I doubt the problem is due to a fuse.  Most likely the problem is the whole cluster its self.  If this is the problem, then it will be a good buy, but if it's not the problem you will be looking at all the wiring to find out where the problem is (Not fun).

Check on Ebay for clusters, you might find a cheap one (make sure its for a 318 though).

The ballpark price can vary, depending on the condition of the car.  Right now all I know is that it's a 22 year old BMW with a 4-cylinder.  Based on age, and its less desirable engine, I would say its probably worth $1500-$3000 (U.S. dollars).

 Good luck,
 Josh
