Buick/Olds: Buick Park Ave Ultra fuse drain, buick park ave, fuse box

Question
We have a 1993 Buick Park Ave Ultra that has a battery drain that my husband has determined is associated with the radio, front interior lights and heat.  When he removed this fuse we no longer had battery problems, but he put it in, in order to get heat, the battery died today in the parking lot at work.  If I figure out which fuse it is, and remove it should the car start back up without a jump?  Also, I tried removing a fuse I thought was the problem that was yellow and said breaker, could this have made the problem worse>  Are there certain directions these fuses go in?  I know this sounds stupid.  I am having a hard time getting ahold of my husband and thought I'd start to check into it myself.

Answer
Hey Jennifer, NO question is stupid. And I'm pretty sure I have the answer.

Let's start with answering your questions in order. First of all, if the battery is dead and you do successfully find and remove the correct fuse, the car will not be able to start up. The battery is already drained and will need a jump to get going again.

Second, I would replace the breaker switch you removed, that controls another system, I doubt you made it worse, but putting it back will help.

Third, fuses do go in a certain direction. They should all be in fully, and with the number of amps (printed in white on the visable tip of the fuse), should all be facing in the same direction.

and finally, I believe your problem is the ground relay. Often on these cars, the ground wire will become corroded and will need to be cleaned off, I went through the same problem with my 94 Grand Prix. by cleaning the ground connection off and taking the car for a bit of a drive, it will recharge the battery. also make sure that the battery terminals are clean too.

If this doesn't clear up the problem it could also be the a short in the fuse box where that troublesome fuse goes in.

PS: it is possible that the battery could have been damaged by not being grounded properly. This MAY require a new battery.
