Cadillac: Electronic Climate Control System, electronic climate control, 1985 cadillac fleetwood

Question
The passenger compartment blower motor on my 1985 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham (front wheel drive, 4.1L/250cuin gas engine) won't move hardly any air. I have an electronic climate control panel. When I jumper the battery's 12vdc directly to the blower motor it runs at a very high speed and puts out plenty of air. When power is applied normally and the fan is set to max AC (lowest temperature set point and auto) or max heat (maximum temperature set point and auto)or high the blower motor still has very little air output and I see by my voltmeter that the blower motor is only getting 4.5 vdc. I've checked to make sure all wiring connections are tight and that I have a good ground. Even when on auto and a normal temperature set point there is hardly ever any air output.

Do I need to replace the electronic climate control panel, blower motor or what? I would appreciate any advice you could give. Thanks in advance.

Answer
NEVER EVER jumper the battery's 12vdc directly to the blower motor unless you want to fry the vehicles electronics. This complex electronic vehicle is NOT your grandfather's Model "A" Ford and if you continue to use JUMPER WIRES without knowing EXACTLY what voltage the unit that you are testing uses you will eventually destroy numerous electronic components and the COST you don't even want to think about.

Next time you have a problem, ASK for help, NEVER ASSUME anything.

Your problem WAS originally a fault of the BLOWER MOTOR CONTROL MODULE of which controls the amount of voltage to the blower motor via the control head and the A/C-Heater programmer.

Hopefully you have not FRIED the control head and the A/C-Heater programmer.

The BLOWER MOTOR CONTROL MODULE is located next to the blower motor and has a multi-pin connector that plugs in from the TOP of the module.

The module fails due to worn brushes within the blower motor.

You will need to REPLACE BOTH the BLOWER MOTOR and the BLOWER MOTOR CONTROL MODULE and cross your fingers that you did not fry the control panel and or the programmer.

NO you ca't just replace the BLOWER MOTOR CONTROL MODULE unless you want to buy another one in a few weeks or months.

Blower Motor cost approx $60.00
Control module cost approx $145.00
