Chevrolet: shift cable, j c whitney, cotter pin

Question
I have a 95 cavalier with a 2.2 and a 5 speed tranny. My shifter cable "head"(end of cable that snaps onto the mushroom cap on the linkage) is severely worn and will not stay on. The dealer wants about $200 for the cable and 4-5 hours for labor.(dealer only part) Is there a a way to "rig" it like replacing the "mushroom cap" with a bolt or somthing and sliding it through the cable then sliding a cotter pin through the bolt or something of the sort? Any info would be greatly appreciated1  thanx

Answer
Scott;
HI well I know it stinks with the prices, but as far as dealer parts only, I do not belive that sh--. I would try to go to a differnt dealer or try some local parts places. or try ( www.J.C.Whitney.com) they might have what you need. do not pay out 500 to fix that. ok
