Chevrolet: 76 camaro LT, edelbrock performer, plug hole

I HAVE A 76 CAMARO I PUT A PERFORMER EDELBROCK INTAKE ON AND A EDELBROCK PERFORMER CARB #1405 WHEN I TRY TO START IT TRIES TO TURN OVER BUT WON'T. BACKFIRES OUT OF THE CARB.  NEW CARB DOESN'T HAVE AN EGR VALVE WHAT DO I DO WHY WON'T IT RUN

Bill I think that the dist. is in did you pop the # 1 plug wire with the plug out and get the air to blast out of the plug hole,than you should be close to or on t.d.c. than check the timming mark to see if it is on t.d.c than put it in on no#1 with the rotor facing no#1 and drop it in.  not in correct.
