Chevrolet: 98 Camaro will not start, fuel pressure guage, schraeder valve

Question
On occasion when trying to start this Camaro all lights turn on, engine turns over but does not fire.  After several attempts the car may start and run fine until it is shut off.  In the past we replaced some type of chip or relay that on at times would not allow the security code on the key to be read and for about a year the car worked fine.   What is this relay and why will the key allow the engine to turn over but not fire?  This seems to be common with Camaros (see question from another reader in Oct. 06).

Answer
Is your SECURITY light on? If not, its not the relay.

Sounds like a fuel delivery issue. Attach a manual fuel pressure guage to your schraeder valve and measure the fuel psi. It should shoot up to 40+ psi instantly. If it comes up slowly, its a bad fuel pump or clogged fuel filter. Change the filter if its been over 12 months or 15,000 miles.
