Chevrolet: 1997 Chevy Tahoe front end vibration, michelin ltx, rear drive shaft

Question
-------------------------
Roger,

I tested the wheel bearings and there is no play in the wheel using a tire iron against tire vs. the floor.  Is it possible for either inside or outside bearings to be bad even though there was not give in the wheel vs. floor exercise?  If not, is a CV joint the only other culprit?

Again, many thanks.

Stephen

Question -
Roger,

The wheel bearings have not been checked yet.  Is there a simple way to determine if they are bad?  How difficult are they to inspect?

I am guessing that is probably the next logical option - to check the wheel bearings.  Would the cv joints cause this also?

Thanks again,

Question -
Roger,

I have a 1997 Chevy Tahoe 4X4 with 100K miles.  I had a slight vibration in the front end (felt like the tires were out of balance) so I replaced the old Firestone tires with new Michelin LTX top of the line tires for optimum ride.  Well, after a pitmon arm replacement and multiple tire balancing and rotations (they road tested each tire and aligned the tire properly on the rim), I still have a major vibration at 65 mph and up.  They said the rims did not appear to be bent, etc.  I have had the brakes and the ujoints in the rear drive shaft replaced as well.  After a thorough check of the front end components, no issues were found.  I am at a lose.  However, when you turn the steering wheel to the right for a hard turn, the right tire seems to jump to the right on its own.  I don't know if any of this is related, but I don't know what to do next.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Stephen Burgess

Hi Stephen
Did you have the wheels balanced on the car , a hi speed balance ? it should show it.  I wonder if the wheel bearings are bad with 100K miles - were they checked .

if you can jack it up from the frame  (the car )and with the tire apx.  a inch from the floor take a tire iron and place it under the center of the tire  and lift up on it hard  - up and down to see the play you will see a bit of play in the tire if it is bad you should feel it.
it must be jacked up on the frame .

It is good you had no play but they still could be worn but i do not think that is it , the cv joints , how are they ? with hi miles they could be bad . and I still wonder as you say it starts at 65 and up
how is / was the alignment ? with a 4x4 it is a pain in the neck when they start to go.did you check for the play on the both front wheels when it was up , grasp the tire at the 3:00 and 9:00 area  and push it in and out and look for  play see if there is any whobble.
