Chevrolet: Carb problems, catalytic convertor, header pipes

Question
Hey Rog, It did not run rough before I changed the exhaust, only a small miss. This problem started after I changed the exhaust, which was the last thing I did out of the things I changed. I didn't change the cam. I put on a kit I got from the National Chevy Association. Consists of Fenton Headers, 2-header pipes, 2-Cherry Bomb glass packs, & 2 tailpipes. The glass packs are almost straight through, I mean you can look right through them. I also changed the distributor cap, I wonder maybe if it's cracked? I just had that cross my mind. I also re-torqued my manifold bolts which did help some.

Sorry, I Didn't mean anything by the "Sir" thing. In my business, you always call people you don't know very well Sir, especially when they're are trying to help you. So Rog, I've narrowed it down pretty much to back pressure that's making my 235 run rough. I've tried 4 different carbs, so I'm pretty sure that aint it. I've rechecked the distributor, wires and firing order are correct. How do I rebuild my back pressure? Do they make some type of catalytic convertor or something.

I Bought a kit from National Chevy Assoc. Fenton Headers, 2-Header pipes, 2-Glass packs, and 2-Tail pipes. The back pressure and readjustment of carb sounds like what I was thinking it was. I never removed the distributor, but did pull cap & wires off, I will double check. The Vacum was plugged correctly. I had that part done at my favorite shop, It sounds like the back pressure or I possibly got the wires back on one position out. Thanks Roger I will check in to all of your suggestions

I have a 1954 Bel Air with a 235 six cylinder, and stock 1 bbl carb. I changed from single exhaust to dual exhaust. My motor now sounds like its flooding out, Pops, backfires etc, once it warms up. If you close the choke all the way it will almost run with just a bit of cutting out. I also got rid of the vacum advance distributor for electronic ignition, but it ran good before I changed the exhaust. Too much gas? Too much air? Any suggestions?

HI Jeff;
       OK when you changed the ex. to duel did you use a kit made for it or  did you just split the pipes up and run two mufflers , as it is not getting any back pres. and you might have to re-time and adj. the carb. and I hope you pluged up where the vacume was comming from.and the most important thing , did you put the dist. in right,. as if it is only one tooth off it will do what its doing now, so prior to adj. anything re-check the dist. and plug wires as I bet it is all in the dist. and the wires. if you pop the # 1 plug it should be on the #1 on the dist,. cap and if not , it should be real close to it and if its not , thats whats wrong , its not in right. ok

Hea Jeff
  Great, Glad to hear you did not pull the dist. out. so you will not have to mess with it, so it could be crossed wires and / or back pres. and you might need some carb. adj. but get the wires and dist fixed first.
good luck

Hi Jeff
     I was wondering, did you put a new cam in the engine ? and did it do what it is now doing prior to the new exaust ? as most h.d. cams and all race cams cause the engine to idle rough ,and even headers change the idle as in most cases with a cam you must turn the idle up so it will run, but if it is not the cam than it must be from the exaust / headers is the kit for that engine ? did you put mufflers on it ? as any good glass pack muffler should help with it.

Hea Jeff;
        I wonder if you could have a crossed wire on the  dist. cap  or if you have a cracked cap as you said. or crossed wires I would re-check them , and any fuel filters if there is any .  Also it was a good idea to re torque the head bolts. Hea did you change the points and cond. if not you should do so.Let me know how you make out ok.
