Chevrolet: General Help for Newbie, monte carlo ss, redish brown

Question
I know my car is a little later than the dates you provided, but my question is very simple. I own a 1986 Monte Carlo SS with a 350. I'm new to the world automotives and being young and female makes help a little hard to come by, lol. Here's my question... Lately, its been running real high RPMs. I checked transmission fluids and whatnot, but everything seems to be fine. The trasnmission itself was replaced about 6 years ago. Anything I can do at home without taking it to a machanic? I'm pretty confident I can tackle most things. Thanks for the help :)

Answer
HI Emily;
         I hope that you do not mean that the engine is raceing and its not going like it use to, if so you might have some tranny trouble, is the fluid a nice red color, if yes thats good if its a redish brown thats not so good it should be changed., and the trans,. filter also. some times tranny trouble is a real simple thing, like a screen or a pluged up valve, etc. is there any tranny shops by you that has a transmission check up for 29.95 special ? as a lot of shops do a check up for a cheep price, if so I recomend that you go to one as you might have a simple thing and if it goes to long it will cost you a hell of a lot to fix. so if thats what your trouble is with the tranny, I would go and have it looked at for 30 bucks, prior to it costing a few thousand.  ok  good luck  and if thats not the trouble with it let me know  ok and Il see what else I think of
