Chevrolet: 98 Blazer Leaking Red Fluid, engine coolant, radiator cap

Question
I have a 98 Blazer (2WD, 4 door). 3 weeks ago, I had to get the A/C compressor, switch, and dryer replaced. A week later, I the radiator was shot (leaking like a sieve). Both were done by an independent shop from recommendations from several of the guys.

About a week ago, I was noticing puddles under the front passenger side. The engine coolant plastic tub was empty - so I removed it and inspected it and around it for leaks and found none. I checked the radiator and it was full. I put it back together and filled it back up with coolant.

Another day or two - and more small puddles. It seems to be dripping all around from the passenger side. There are 3-5 puddle ares from near and behind the passenger front tire to under the battery / radiator cap area. When my wife started the truck and left this morning, it was splattered, suggesting some dripping on the fan or maybe it getting blown. All hoses that I can see appear OK, and I am not able to see any connection problems (but I have not taken anything else apart to get a better look).

The fluid is red in color, and has a oily feeling to it. It does not smell exactly what I am use to antifreeze smelling like, so I am puzzled. I am planning to take it to the shop this week, but want to get a clue as to what I am up against.

Thanks ...

Answer
Hi Joe, if the fluid is red its not coolant. It is likely to be transmission fluid. There are two small transmission lines that connect to the radiator to cool the transmission fluid. Maybe they are not completely tightened where they thread into the rad. You should have it checked asap because if the transmission fluid is leaking it could cause serious damage to the transmission if the fluid gets too low. I hope this helps you, if you need more info just let me know. Regards, Keith.
