Chevrolet: Computer, chevy cavalier, cavalier rs

Question
Harold,

I have this 1991 Chevy Cavalier RS, v6. It's got a ton of miles on it, and in the last year I've had to put a ton of money into it (nearly $2000) I just love this car, you know? I'd rather keep it running then bother with a new one, plus it's red and it's convertible and no matter how old it is, you always look cool in a red convertible. LOL. It's hard to let go.

So, after my latest repair (brake booster), my mechanic told me he was getting some stange readings from the computer, which might indicate I needed a new one. He doesn't do that, told me to see a dealer. He couldn't go into cost.

Do you have any idea what that repair would run someone?

Answer
Just because he thinks he was getting some strange readings from the computer doesn't mean that it needs a new one. All it takes is for one sensor to act up and all the readings can be way off.
If you dont have a check engine light on or a running problem, you probably dont have a problem.
If you do have a light on or a running problem, you should take it to the dealer and have it looked at.
It will cost you some diagnostic time, usually under $100.
If it does need a new computer, they are somewhere around 100-150 on something that old.
