Question -
CAN YOU TELL ME IF A CAR CAN PASS A SMOG CHECK WITH A BLOWN HEAD GASKET/S AND/OR HOLE IN THE MUFFLER?
Answer -
A blown head gasket is more serious than worrying about smog check. This will cause you more problems and money if not checked or repaired, depending on how bad it is.Causing water to get in the oil and so on.A hole in the muffler will not pass because the exhaust is escaping from underneath the car and not the tail pipe.If the hole is not repaired it will just burn a larger hole in the muffler causing the car to be extremely loud.

I WAS OFFERED A DEAL FROM A PLACE THAT I WORK FOR ON A DODGE NEON 1995.  I HAD ALREADY PAID FOR IT AND THE DAY I WAS SUPPOSED TO PICK IT UP I WAS TOLD IT HAD BLOWN HEAD GASKETS AND A HOLE IN THE MUFFLER, BUT YET 3 DAY PREVIOUS IT HAD JUST PASSED SMOG.  THEY SAID THE ONLY REASON IT PASSED WAS BECAUSE THE PREVIOUS OWNER WHO HAD JUST TRADED IT IN HAD PUT IN STOP LEAK.  I STILL HAVE MY DOUBTS THAT EVEN THAT WOULD FOOL SMOG TESTING EQUIPMENT.  WHAT IS YOUR THOUGHTS?

Answer
Sarah,
My opinion is to leave it alone unless you are willing to put a lot of money into the car to have it repaired.Stop leak just temporarily stops leaks usually made to stop radiator leaks.I don't think it will stop a leak if the head is leaking water. And usually if the head is cracked, this will cause an internal water leak causing the water to mix with the oil.If the head is cracked the car has been run hot.And also if it was run hot and they are adding stop leak the radiator must have been leaking to pour the water out.Run from the deal!Get your money back.
