Land Rover Repair: 96 Discover vibration when under load, noise vibration, fan clutch

Question
I have a '96 discovery with 133k miles on it and automatic transmission.

In the last few days it started making a lot of noise (kind of a roar) and vibration when accelerating or going up a hill. More torque = more noise/vibration. It's hard to tell exactly where it's coming from but it's not something like wheels out of balance. The odd thing is that it only does it going forward, not in reverse. I would think that means something but maybe not

Doesn't seem to make a difference if I'm in drive or manually select gears.

A few months ago I did start noticing two drops of something every time I would park. They are real close together and under the steering wheel area.  Looks like oil but I haven't noticed any oil usage.

It also seems like the steering has loosened up lately.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks for your time!

Answer
I think you need to do some more tests to find the source of the noise.

Is it loud when you race the engine at a stop?  If so, look to the fan or fan clutch.
If it is indeed worse under load, look carefully at the driveline.  Are one of your driveshaft u joints coming apart?  Is there a failure in the differential?

The statement that it only does it going forward may be misleading because you can't go very fast in reverse, and you do not normally have a load going backward either.

If the steering is loose, look close at all the components.  Chances are that is a different problem but loose steering should not be ignored
