1997 dodge stratus. Engine 2.0 when first started, slight pounding sound appears coming from top of motor, and not the lifters. Motor warms up noise goes away. How do I tell if this is a cam bearing? Thanks.
Answer -
How many miles does the car have on it?If it's top end it could be a number of things. How long has it been doing this?As far as knowing how to check it,you'll have to determine the mileage and just tear it down.If the car has high mileage it may need an engine rebuild.

Answer
You really can't check anything other than when changing the oil just check to see if you have any metal in the oil.If it's been doing it this long and it happens to be a bearing it would be wise just to rebuild the entire engine.Knocking is not normal and when this starts inside the engine other than a normal lifter tick or tap it needs rebuilding.
