Question - Can this happen if you just replace the dis.cap?I am at my whits end with it.
My truck started cutting out.I put it on a computer and it told me cylinder#8 is misfiring.I changed the plugs, wires, distributer cap and rotory button and this did not fix the problem.I also replaced head gaskets, intake gaskets. Can you tell me something else i can try or what i need to do.It is a 99 dodge ram 1500 4x4 with a 318 engine. Thanks a lot Danny
Answer -
If you removed the distributor when doing the work, did you make sure the engine was on top dead center? The reason i'm asking is because the distributor can cause this if you had the line on the harmonic balancer just a tiny bit off. Some folks say that you can get one on top dead center by removing the number one plug and putting your finger over the plug hole and have someone turn it over until you hear a spew sound, and say this is top dead center, but don't realize that the piston will drop just a little, causing the timing to be off,i know this from experience. This is why the lines need to line up exactly.

Answer
No not if just the distributor is replaced,Double check your plug wires.....Go buy a Haynes or Chiltons manual and look at the plug wire routing.Check this carefully,if it started skipping after you changed everything this is probably the cause. On a Dodge it is easy to cross a wire due tothe distributor being so far back up under the firewall.Let me know the results.RamMan
