Ford: 2001 ford explorer v-6 4wh drive stuck, ford explorer, snow storm

after using my 4 wheel drive during the last snow storm, it feels like the 4 wheel drive is not total disengaged. the light is off & when i switch it back into 4wh the light does come back on. can you advise me, thx mike

Hi.  

sounds as though the front wheels may still be engaged,  the light comes on when the transfer case switches to 4x4, but doesnt know if the front wheels are locked in or even if there is afront driveshaft.

lift the front wheels and see if you can turn them without the front driveshaft turning, or the opposite wheel.  if either turns, look at the front axle disconnect. it is a vacuum operated device on the passenger side of the front axle.  let me know.
