Question
dear tim i have a 1993 f350 with a 460 engine my truck was getting 10 to 12 miles a gallon now it is getting 7 to 8 i noticed the wiring to my vapor canister needs repair. can a non functioning canister affect fuel mileage, and if not what are some things that can. any help or suggestions would be greatly appriciated. thank you                     sincerly jeff

Answer
Hi

Your vapour canister does not have wiring to it.  or at least , it shouldn't.

there will be wiring to the solenoid and sensors located in the vacuum hoses from the fuel tank and to the engine. But I have not seem damage here cause an increased fuel consumption.

Is your Check Engine Light (CEL) working? I mean , does it come on for the test when key is turned to "on"?. If so, does it stay on while engine is running?

Poor state of tune up, temperature, low tire pressures, can all have an effect also.

if there is a CEL light on, or if all the tune-up and tire pressures and fluids are good, I would recommend that you get your oxygen sensor (s) tested. A lazy, or dead oxygen sensor, may not set a code (CEL), but still may cause driveability and/ or fuel consumption problems.

Let me know what you find.

How is the oxygen sensor?
