Ford: Clutch noise, clutch work, clutch replacement

Question
Hi Jason:  I own a 1985 F150 2wd standard 6 cylinder truck.  I had the clutch replaced a few months ago and have only put a few hundred miles on since.  Soon after I got it back from clutch work, I noticed a high-pitched squealing sound whenever the clutch was engaged (I think I'm saying this right - I mean whenever I'm IN GEAR).  When I push the clutch in, there is no noise.  The noise comes & goes a little.  There is no problem with operation of the truck at all - just this irritating sound.  I didn't connect it with the clutch replacement until the last couple of weeks when someone told me it was the throw out bearing and it should be fixed under warrantly by whoever did my work.  I took it back to the mechanic who did the work, and they said, basically, that the noise didn't indicate any problem and to not worry about it - they'd have to drop the transmission to do anything about it.  Since I drive the truck so rarely, I wouldn't care about the noise itself - but I have the truck for sale and I think it will not sound good to prosepective buyers.  So, here are my questions (finally...):  1) Does the sound indicate a flawed throw out bearing that I have a right to ask the installer to replace under warranty?  2) DOES the sound matter at all - except that it's irritating?  If the installer refuses to make this right even if he should be expected to, I could at least show your response to anyone interested in the truck if the sound concerned them (assuming you say it's not something to worry about).  Thanks so much for taking the time to clear these questions up for me...

Answer
Jay, unfortunately, I would say that the noise does indicate a throw-out bearing that is prematurely worn.  Or possibly out of line.  If I were in your position, I would take the truck to another mechanic that will give you a written estimate on what he/she "thinks" the problem might be.  Then, I would take it to the place where you had the clutch replaced and ask them to "please make the noise go away."  I hate do talk bad about mechanics, however it is likely that they did not replace the throw out bearing when they replaced your clutch.  I don't know if this has helped you, but I wish you good luck,    Jason
