Answer
Larry, it sounds like you have an ignition coil or a pick-up coil that is going bad.  The ignition coil should be easy to locate and replace and you can buy one at your local parts store for about 15 dollars.  The pick-up coil is inside the distributor.  In order to replace it, you will have to remove everything inside the distributor.  It truly is not that hard to do, but if it is your first time inside a distributor, then you may run into a few problems.  The "vernier" gear is held in by a roll pin.  The best way that I have found to get the gear off is to take two screwdrivers on each side of the gear and pry up.  The gear will slide along the shaft.  Don't lose the roll pin or the small clips inside the distributor.  I would start with the ignition coil and see if you still have any problems.  Good luck and I hope this helps,   Jason
