Ford: Starting problem, ford 150, solenoid

Question
Vehicle-2000 Ford 150, 4x2, 4.2 Liter.  On occasion when attempting to start my truck the starter does not engage but produces a grinding noise.  I immediately discontinue the starting procedure.  Try a second time and the starter engages and the motor starts.  Is this caused by a bad starter or just the solenoid?

Answer
Dave, this really sounds like a solenoid problem.  If you have a fender mounted solenoid, it is an easy, and inexpensive fix.  If the solenoid is mounted on the starter, it will still be quite easy, just not as inexpensive.  I always recommend to people to just replace the entire starter, as opposed to trying to take the solenoid off and put it back together.  I hope this answers your question.  If you have any more problems, or questions, feel free to ask.     Jason
