GM-GMC: Hesitation problem with G20, chevrolet g20, camper conversion

Question
Hello,

I have a Chevrolet G20 1979 (Camper conversion) with a 350 4BBL with 85 000 Milles on it. The only problem I have is a slight hesitation when pushing on the gas after idling at a stop light, like if the engine will stall, but never do. Other then that, the engine runs very smooth at normal operating temperature. There is also a burn gas smell coming from the engine dept. when the engine runs on compression, like going down a hill for exemple. Any idea?

Answer
It is likely a worn out accelerator pump in the carburetor.  This is a plunger-like device that sprays a shot of fuel into the venturis when the throttle is opened (when you step on the gas pedal).

Unless you feel capable of taking the top of the carburetor off to change the acclerator pump, it is a job best left to a specialist.

The engine is likely running a little lean when decelerating and the smell, unless it gets worse, is probably normal.
