GM-GMC: greasing on a 1986 chev G 20 van, lower ball joints, tie rod ends

Question
Do you know if there is any parts on a 1986 chev G20 van that need to be greased? If so can you tell me were to locate rhem and what type of grease is needed? Just want to maintain my van and keep it in good running condition. Thanks!

Answer
Toni,

Yes, there are several places that require grease on your van.  You should use an EP (extreme pressure) chassis grease and it is available from all auto parts stores in cartridges for grease guns.

The locations are the upper and lower ball joints at each front wheel (4 places total), the outer and inner tie rod ends that steer the front wheels (4 places total), the idler arm on the passenger side steering linkage (two places total) and the Pitman arm on the driver's side steering linkage near the power steering gear box (1 place total).

Check the U-joints on the drive shaft.  They are not greasable from the factory, but replacement U-joints may have been fitted and may have grease fittings.

Also, the front wheel bearings must be repacked every 24,000 miles.  This requires wheel bearing greae that meets GM specifications.
