GM-GMC: Charging System, auto parts store, electrical devices

Question
I recently changed the worn distributor cap and rotor on my 91 GMC 305 Sierra pick-up. When finished, the Alt. idiot light stays on. Is it coincidence that the alternator has quit charging, (it has quit charging, motor dies when you remove positive battery cable) or could I have done something to cause this in changing the cap and rotor?

Answer
Replacing the parts you changed should not have caused any problems with the alternator.

However, if you shorted out any electrical devices, the alternator could have been damaged.

Remove the alternator and have it tested, for free, an auto parts store.
