GM-GMC: backup lights, speedometer, odometer and speed sensor buffer, speedometer cable, chevy silverado

Question
I don,t have any backup lights on my '93 chevy silverado c1500 6 cyl. and upon troubleshooting, discovered no speedometer and odometer not working now. Fuses are good. Also what is speed sensor buffer and where is it located. Thank you.

Answer
Reverse lights are operated by a switch mounted on top of the steering column, close to where the column meets the firewall.  Your switch is bad or, if you are lucky, out of adjustment.

If your speedometer and odometer are mechanical, your speedometer cable is broken.  If they are digital, it may not have a cable and the problem may be anything from a broken/disconnected wire to faulty gauges.

Spped sensor buffers are either built in to the speedometer housing or are located in the tailshaft of the transmission housing (where a speedometer cable is normally installed).  I do not have any technical references for vehicles newer than 1984-1985, so you will have to try to find a shop manual or repair manual for your vehicle.
