I JUST HAD THE TRANSMISSION OVERHAULD AND THE SHOP OWNER NOTICED NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR END.THE NOISE STOPS IF I PUT IT IN NETRAL WHILE DRIVING. THE TRUCK IS A 1998 C1500 CHEVROLET WITH 130,OOO MILES I HAD THE FLUID CHANGED TWICE AND HE SAID IT IS KIND OF SOON TO HAVE TO REPLACE THE REAR END, universal joints are new ,now there is a vibration on decelaration and when making left or right turns there is a clunking sound

Answer
If the driveshaft was marked properly during disassembly, and reinstalled just the same way as it was removed, there should not be any vibration associated with it.

The turning "clunk" likely means that there is a problem with the rear axle that is going to require attention in the near future.

But first, one other possibility:  Does the rear axle have posi-traction?  If so, it requires a special additive to work without binding on dry pavement.  In the glove box, or on one of the fenders under the hood, is a list of Regular Production Option (RPO) codes.  Find the one for the rear axle and call your local dealer to find out if the rear axle is posi-traction.

If your rear axle does not have posi-traction, you may wish to start looking for a used rear axle from a salvage yard.  After getting some estimates, check with repair centers and get estimates from them.  I think that you will find that removing and replacing the axle with a salvage part may be the best alternative.
