GM-GMC: Chevy truck, chevy truck, z71

Question
I drive a chevy truck (1989 z71) with a 305 5.0 l v8. The truck starts up fine, but then after it warms up 30 minutes or so. I shut the truck off and then it will not start, no click - does not turn truck over. Then I wait for an hour and it starts - first crank.
The battery is new - alternator is new
volts = 14
while cranking = 11

Could the coil be giving trouble?

thanks for your help, you are very helpful and your past help has worked.
I am pleased with your chevy knowledge

Answer
It is very possible that the coil is overheating and that is causing the truck to protect it self by not starting till it cools down.

If no lights come on the dash and there are no warning signals I would have the local garage look at the coil and see if they think this is possibility. This is something that I would have to physically see to be a good help on.

Let me know the result.

The cranking volts are fine that is normal. It would not be the alternator that has nothing to do with starting.

I would also look at the starter and the connection to the starter. If the connection is loose that can cause that sort of reaction and it is possible that the starter is going bad.

Starters are fairly cheap as far as I remember.
