GM-GMC: flushing my cooling system, dexcool coolant, gmc yukon

Question
Hey wassup Thomas. I have a 2003 GMC Yukon SLE and was wondering if there is an easy way to flush my cooling system myself, instead of bringing my truck to the dealer for this type of service. I also cant locate the radiator cap (if there is one that is). Well I hope you can help me. Thanks.

Answer
Delbert,

Well, the good news is your truck should have a drain plug in the bottom of the radiator, the bad news is it can sometimes be hard to get at and/or open. The radiator cap is an easy one its actually the cap on the coolant reservoir. Of course I have to tell you that the Dexcool coolant your truck comes with is pretty toxic and can't just be flushed down your sewer, thats why most shops will charge and enviromental fee with a Coolant flush since the coolant must be picked-up and recycled properly. If you make it through all these obsticles, its important to get a proper 50/50 mixture of coolant and water back into the sytem as well as avoiding any air in the sytem witch could create an air-lock and cause the truck to overheat. So...it may be a good idea to spend the money and have it done by a shop, its just a really nasty messy job and the price of a flush is not that bad at most shops. Oh Yeah, just so you know don't get that coolant on your hands or breathe in the fumes that stuffs Toxic too. Hope this helps
