Honda: 1991 honda lx, fuel pump relay, dead fuel

Question
QUESTION: The car just cut off, check the main relay and fuel pmp,but not getting power to the fuel pmp.,replaced distr. and car still turns over, but will not start

ANSWER: Hey Mac,

I don't know the full story, what do you mean by "car just cut off", does it mean as you were driving? Or do you mean that it just won't start?I'll just make the assumption that is the 2nd one.

It's really hard to make a diagnosis when I don't know the particular model (accord, civic), the mileage (helps out a lot because Honda problems can almost always be determined by mileage) and the circumstances that led to the problem.

The fact that the car turns over rules out Starter and solenoid, so the next thing to check would be fuel delivery. It could be a clogged fuel filter or a bad fuel pump (dead). The fuel pump has a fuel pump relay, not a main relay.

Considering that it is a 1991, 18+ years old, it is very likely that it is dead fuel pump. Most Honda fuel pumps go after 150k and up, the reason for listing the mileage of a vehicle when asking for a diagnosis.

I would go ahead and replace the fuel filter at the same time as well due to the age of the car as part of maintenance and to rule out that problem as well.

QUESTION: as driving down the road the car just cut off.Honda Accord 1991.Powered up the fuel pump and it works.Getting power to the distr.Donot have any spark. Have a mechanic the has spent 8 hrs on this thing and still not has figured it out. When you turn the key on you hear the main relay picks up,but you donot hear the fuell pmp pick up

Answer
I am not clear about the "Donot have any spark" part. Do you mean the spark plug?

There is a Fuel Pump Relay, has that been checked or atleast swapped out with another similar relay just to check if it is a good relay?

It boggles me how you can get "power" to the distributor but not get power from the distributor cap to the spark plugs. If I recall right, that model still had a mechanical distributor and not an electronic one. I wonder wether it is a new distibutor cap or not.

The only way a car will not get spark to the spark plug is if he forgot to put back the Rotor which is responsible for transfering the Main spark to the spark plugs via the points...you may want to ask him about that. That answers that question. If current is going to the distributor then that means the Main Coil is fine.

There seems to be too many issues going here and is not being methodically approached.

Let me repeat this again, check the Fuel Pump Relay NOT the Main Relay, these are two separate DIFFERENT relays.
