Honda: Parking brake malfunction, rear wheels, ken moore

Question
Hi Ray,

One day without warning my parking brake either came loose from it's secure home or has popped. How do I determine if the left cable or the right cable is damaged and how do I replace it?
Honda Accord 2001 EX, 4 door, 4cyclinder.

Please help!

Answer
Hey Ken,did the park brake lever pretty much come out of the center console in your hand? I doubt that, but if it did then ya,it came loose from its now "un-secured" home.Block the front wheels and jack the rear wheels up off the ground, apply the park break(dont forget to use jack stands!)and try to rotate the rear wheels by hand and that will tell you which side you have a problem with.also you can remove all your CDs from your center console under the arm rest untill you see the bottom, open the trap door on the bottom and pull and release the break lever while looking at the cables inside. If the cables are moving then check back at the rear calipers, are the cables moving the lever on the calipers? yes,and you can still rotate the wheel, bad caliper.no,the cable doesnt pull?broken cable.you need to find a good repair manual now.....Ray
