Hyundai: Hesitating at Acceleration, champion spark plugs, spark plug wires

Question
My 1998 Tiburon is hesitating at acceleration and I was wondering if the problem could be the fuel injectors.  The car otherwise is very sporty looking and handles very well.  Please advise Thanks

Answer
Does it do it all the time or only once in a while?  Also, how many miles are on the car?

My first guess would be a problem in the ignition system. A lot of Tiburons seem to be having problems with bad spark plugs and wires.  Your Tib probably has Champion spark plugs in it, which Hyundai has started replacing with NGKs.

My car had such bad hesitation when accelerating that my check engine light would start flashing.  I took it to the dealer and they replaced the spark plugs.  The car ran absolutely great for about 1,000 miles, then started acting up again.

I eventually found out the problem with my car was with the coil packs mounted on the side of the engine.  Try opening the hood in pitch darkness and have someone rev the engine while staring at the spark plug wires and coil packs.  If you see ANY blue sparks or blue light there is a voltage leak.  Your dealer should at least try replacing your plug wires and spark plugs before replacing the coil packs.  If you see blue sparks coming from the coil packs, that means they're shot and need to be replaced.

I doubt your injectors are clogged.  Hyundais use 2 fuel filters, one in the gas tank for large particles, and another inside the engine compartment.  Plus, today's fuels are so pure that I can't see your injectors being clogged.  If they are clogged the dealership can do a flush which works remarkably well.

Email me at tibfx@iname.com and let me know how many miles you have,  whether you're under warranty, and under what conditions the hesitation occurs.  If you're out of warranty I'll give you a detailed list of things to have checked first.  Most you could probably do yourself.

It's usually the simplest things that cause the problem.
