my engine diagnosis indicator is on and my auto gear will not change gear.my car is merc 180c 2002

Have you checked the transmission fluid level and the engine oil level. Obviously it would not be a good idea to drive the vehicle in the condition as an over speed of the engine could occur and the transmission could be damaged.

You could have an independent repair service check the codes and that should help locate the problem. Or you may be able to purchase an inexpensive tester and check the codes your self.
