Mercedes: 84 SD Tranny, clutch packs, clutch pack

Question
I have a 1984 300 SD, that has just begun slipping from a standing stop.  Once it gets into 2nd gear, no problems. Do you have any tips?

Answer
Bernie,
Probably the 1st reverse band and or clutch pack. Just a matter of time for a rebuild.
Unless the fluid has been changed on a very regular strict schedule, it is NOT a good idea to start now. There is lots of matter caked around the O rings and such. New fluid has a detergent and will wash out the 'stuff' and probably cause more harm than good.
As a last resort you may try 'Mechanic in a Can' type stuff, but only if you are sure that you are planning to do a rebuild anyway.
The "Transmission Dr." type stuff will some time swell some of the 'O' rings to allow for better shifting.
In any event delaying the inevitable may cause metal to metal contact in the clutch packs and or your planetary bands, and that is not good.
A good used transmission may be your lease expensive option.
I would locate a knowledgeable Mercedes independent transmission repairman and ask their opinion.

Good Luck
Rob
