Mercedes: merz l997 S600 v-12, mercedes club, temp gauge

Question
My check engine light is on.  Someone told me if it comes on 10 times the car will lock up.  How serious is this check engine light.  Also, they said it's related to my transmission..If you know of this, what do you think the cost of repair will be.  Thanks, Teri

Answer
It is important that you have the vehicle checked by a technician who has and instrument to plug into sensor port to determine the cause. It could be something as simple as time to change a filter. OR, it could indicate a problem with the transmission or other components.
I had a Mazda and the check engine light came on on the interstate. I decide to drive a couple miles to the next exit, by the time a made the ramp, the vehicle was so hot that the engine quit. It got so hot in fact that the head was cracked. There had been on prior indication that the temperature was out of range. ( could have been a bad temp gauge).
In any case to ignore the light could mean HUGE repair cost.
A little now for a diagnostic could save thousands if the V-12 if about to go deep six... same with the transmission.
I would suggest that you locate a good independent Mercedes Mechanic. Call the local Mercedes club to find someone, and pay the cost of a hookup to the computer.

Good Luck and let us know what you find out.
