Mercedes: ignition/tranny, mercedes benz 300sd, diesel mercedes


Question
85 diesel mercedes...car does not shut off after turning off and removing
the key.it continues to run...What's up with that? also tranny doen't want
to shift out of 1st or 2nd...this is my kids car..i had her take off the
positive cable to shut down the car and told her to check the tranny fluid.
she doen't know how to check the fluid, i live out of town and can't help
her til sat 4/29..please help!

Answer
#1. Removing the battery cable while running wrecks the voltage regulator, and should not turn off the engine, the injection system is pure mechanical.
Note:
The regulator mounts to the alternator with two Philip's screws = easy DIY, remember to disconnect the battery first.

#2. The engine shutoff valve on the injection pump is vacuum operated = a disconnected line, bad vacuum check valve at the vacuum pump, bad vacuum brake power booster or bad vacuum pump will cause your symptoms. please read through the following thread for diagnostic and DIY data.

#3. Transmission fluid can not be checked without the engine running, the dip stick is red/black on the passenger side near the bulkhead.
Note:
It is not possible for this vehicle to suck transmission fluid through the intake, it could draw it into the vacuum pump, and wreck the diaphragm.
