hi dinger. I am looking at buying a 1993 3000 gt sl. 120,000 miles. the seller tells me that the overdrive is disconnected and won't engage but that it shifts and runs fine even at highway speeds. Is this something serious? is it repairable and if so how much money would it cost roughly? Can this be left alone if it does not pose an immediate problem?

Answer -
Hey Jack!

There is no way that I know of to "disconnect" overdrive, which is fourth gear, unless you hit the switch on or off on the selector. Something fishy here Jack. I suggest you tell the guy to let you run it down to your local transmission shop and let them diagnose it. Cottman Transmission does this for free. This way you'll at least know what's up. Besides, who the hell would "disconnect" O/D? Don't tell the shop that your thinking of buying it. They might refuse to do the diag and make the person selling take it down there. Let the shop think you own it. Let me know what they say after the diag. I can't wait to hear this one! LOL Even if it needs a transmission, it's still a nice car, worth fixing if you get it for the right price. Nothing like a 3k for "Drifting"! Transmissions for that car run in the neighborhood of $2500, rebuilt/installed  give or take. Depends on just how many parts we need to get overdrive back. Likely, I feel, it's a broken overdrive hub assembly or broken drum inside. Could even be an electrical problem.  Then you luck out, for now...

Answer
Hey Jack,

Who said a way to a man's heart is his stomach? It's the car he loves... Ok, so D1 is manual low gear or first. D2 is manual second gear. When you have it in overdive there is a lock out button on the selector (stick). With that button out you will not go into overdrive, but only to third gear. Third gear is fine on the highway to about 70. Watch your tach, anything over 4,000 RPM is tearing the engine apart. Yeah, I know...., that's what they tell us at school though. Oh, and don't push it till you've had the transmission overhauled. Enjoy that thing, send me a photo! dingerdave01@yahoo.com
