Mitsubishi: Possible Galant transmission/engine RPM problem, mitsubishi galant, transmission shop

Question
I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant, 2.4L, I-4 engine, with automatic trans.  Gear shifting seems a little inconsistent.  Engine noise might be a little louder than usual at highway speeds.  "Service Engine Soon" warning light comes on and off intermittently. RPM is 2200-2300 at 55 MPH.  Is that within the expected range?  Are these symptoms of any particular problem?

Answer
Hi Monroe,

Seems that your car is not achieving overdrive. The CEL (check engine light) coming on is the clue to the repair. I suggest you take your car to a shop that can scan the computer for codes. You might try a Cottman Transmission shop because they will do this at no charge. Resubmit to me what they found and I will help you decide what to do with the information.
